One man has been charged in connection to a drug investigation in downtown Red Deer.

RCMP say it was shortly before 2 p.m. on Oct. 2 when the Downtown Patrol Unit (DPU) arrested a wanted male while conducting mountain bike patrols in the area.

Members were in the area of 43 Street when they are said to have observed a group of males in a parking lot using illicit drugs. It was then determined that one of the males was wanted on outstanding warrants and previous charges.

Upon arresting the male, RCMP say they located several items on him, including a weigh scale, tools used for cutting drugs, empty baggies, baggies containing meth (~5 grams), fentanyl (~24.5 grams), and $590 in cash.

“Red Deer RCMP is committed to public safety and will continue to use proactive patrols and intelligence-led initiatives to reduce crime within the city of Red Deer,” Red Deer RCMP say in a release.

“Specialized support units, such as the DPU, aim to address specific areas of concern within our community. Since 2018, Red Deer RCMP DPU have been providing highly-visible, proactive enforcement of Red Deer’s downtown core.”

A 39-year-old male resident of Red Deer has been charged with one count of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking a Controlled Substance.
