RDP Athletics recap: Sept. 26-28

Both the RDP Kings and Queens Cross Country Running teams placed first at Running Room Grand Prix #3. The Queens Soccer team picked up a pair of wins. The RDP Kings Soccer team was downed in a close contest. The Rodeo team achieved several noteworthy results at the Northern Lights Rodeo.

Cross Country Running

Running Room Grand Prix #3 | Northwestern Polytechnic | Saturday, September 27

Both the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (14 points) and Queens (23 points) Cross Country Running teams placed first at Running Room Grand Prix #3 in Grande Prairie. Japhet Kipkosgei (24:38) led the Kings and all ACAC male runners over 8 km. RDP’s Andrew Leffers (25:59) was second and Jack Steeves (27:11) placed fifth among their peers.

Julianna Chipiuk (21:38) ranked first among the Queens and all ACAC female runners over 6 km. Georgia Sawchuk (23:04) finished third and Kammy Park (23:52) was seventh.

Soccer

Queens Soccer | University of Alberta Augustana | Saturday, September 27

The RDP Queens earned a 2-0 decision over the fifth seed Vikings (1-4-1) at the U of A Augustana. McKenna Leslie (Bachelor of Education) and Olivia Lundell (Open Studies) scored for the Polytechnic. Jana Leskewich (five saves) and Jessie Stewart (two) combined to make seven saves, picking up the shutout.

Queens Soccer | RDP Main Field | Sunday, September 28

The second place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team (6-1-0) defeated the sixth place Ambrose University Lions (0-4-3) by a nine goal margin (9-0). Leslie scored three goals. Both Sein Furuyama and Kennedy Van Arragon had two goals. Lundell and Paige Kalbfleisch added singles. Beaumont’s Leskewich earned the shutout.

Kings Soccer | RDP Main Field | Sunday, September 28

The fifth seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team (0-3-3) was edged 2-1 by the third place Ambrose University Lions (2-2-2) at the RDP Main Field. Liam Parsons, a third-year forward from Edmonton, scored the Kings’ goal.

Rodeo

Rodeo | Northern Lights Rodeo | Dawson Creek, BC | September 27-28

The RDP Rodeo team had many solid performances at the two-day Northern Lights Rodeo in Dawson Creek, BC. On Saturday, Kaybree Zunti was first in Team Roping (7.9 seconds) with partner Tray Hoffman from Lakeland College, sixth in Breakaway Roping (12.7) and twelfth in Goat Tying (17.1). Aidyn Thomas finished 15th in Pole Bending (23.79) and 17th in Barrel Racing (17.43). Mattie Jensen (16.99) ranked 10th in Barrel Racing on the opening day. On Sunday, Zunti (16 seconds) took top spot in Barrel Racing, second in Breakaway Roping (4.2) and 10th in Goat Tying (11). Mattie Jensen (23.2) placed 14th in Pole Bending. Marli Sandum (16.91) was 20th in Barrel Racing on the second day.
