Preliminary hearing scheduled for youth charged in fatal Red Deer stabbing

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a local youth charged in a fatal stabbing in downtown Red Deer last year.

River Roan, 19, of Red Deer, is scheduled to find out in Red Deer Court of Justice from Sept. 14-18, 2026, if his case has enough evidence to go to trial.

Roan is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 43-year-old Anthony Spiller of Red Deer on Dec. 28, 2024.

It was approximately 10:28 p.m. that evening when Red Deer RCMP received a complaint of a male who was standing at the corner of 49 Avenue and 53 Street in Red Deer with injuries consistent with a bladed weapon.

Mounties say officers attended the location and arrested an 18-year-old suspect a short distance away.
