Nicholas Bennett has made some noise at the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships this week.

The 21-year-old from Parksville, B.C., who now calls Red Deer home, won the bronze medal in the men’s 200-metre freestyle S14 final on Sunday. He finished the race in 1:53.97.

The Red Deer Catalina Swim Club athlete then followed that up with a fourth place finish in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB14 final this morning. He finished the race in 1:04.90, just behind Great Britain’s Harry Stewart who finished in 1:04.04.

Bennett is the reigning Paralympic champion and 2023 world silver medallist in the 100 breast S14.

According to a media release, he was disappointed with his his time, which was over a second off his Canadian record of 1:03.71.

“Could be anything. I don’t know, to be honest. We’ve been training for seven months,” said Bennett when asked about the race. “Right now, I’m just trying to replay it in my head, and see what we could do better.

“It’s quite disappointing but, you know, I just have to get ready for my next race.”

Next up for Bennett, he’ll compete in the second heat of the 200 individual medley SM14 on Thursday. He won gold in this event last summer at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.
