C.A.T. presents Frankenstein for two-week stay at Memorial Centre

Sep 20, 2025 | 3:57 PM

Just in time for Halloween, Central Alberta Theatre presents Frankenstein, Oct. 17-Nov. 1, at the Red Deer Memorial Centre.

Per the CAT:

Prepare to step into a world where copper gears hum, brass pipes gleam, and Victorian elegance collides with mechanical ingenuity. Central Alberta Theatre (CAT) is proud to open its 2025-2026 season with Frankenstein, Tim Kelly’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic, directed by Ronen Eagles and Randy Corney. Audiences will experience a steampunk-inspired reimagining of Victor Frankenstein’s gothic tale, blending romance, horror, and the futuristic charm of mechanical invention.

“When discovery and progress take hold of connection and tranquility, the levity of nature’s blues and greens are uprooted by the cool edge of copper and brass. The primitive, romantic, and natural decay; leaving only the sophisticated, pragmatic, and mechanics as the tools to take on an emotional and distorted world,” say directors Ronen Eagles and Randy Corney.

“In this era-breaking rendition, Victor Frankenstein grapples with the consequences of his curious creation; his morality, empathy, humanity, and his instinct for self-preservation are at odds. Ultimately, our unsettled scientist is left with one question: Is monstrosity formed from creation or cruelty?”

In this adaptation, Victor returns to his Swiss chateau, haunted by the secret of a creature built from the dead. As the creature demands companionship, Victor faces the consequences of tampering with life itself. The CAT production will transport audiences into a visually stunning steampunk world, complete with exposed gears, Edison bulbs, brass and copper accents, and a laboratory brimming with scientific chaos. From the richly appointed lounge to the cluttered lab, every detail underscores the tension between human emotion and mechanical precision.
