Laura Svab, a long-time resident of Blackfalds, and current town councillor, has announced her candidacy for mayor in this October’s municipal election.

She’ll be taking on incumbent mayor Jamie Hoover.

Svab says her vision is to ’empower Blackfalds voices,’ and ensuring the community is served with dedication and integrity.

Safety is one of her key priorities, having sat on the local policing committee for six years, she notes in a news release.

“Our community has grown quickly in a short amount of time, and a lot of concerns from residents are related to crosswalks and traffic safety. There are also challenging traffic areas in town, like Womacks Road,” she says.

Svab also says she’s passionate about affordable housing, with emphasis on supporting the 55+ community.

“I believe it is also important to have clear communication with residents and support the community by attracting reputable businesses to support long-term growth and prosperity,” she adds.

“I believe in listening, engaging and acting on the priorities of our community. Together we can continue to build a safe, inclusive and thriving Blackfalds for all generations.”

Svab notes her and husband Ray have lived in town for 25 years, and have three kids.

She has sat on town council for two terms over eight years
