Compostable yard waste

Town of Ponoka says annual fall clean up begins Oct. 14

Sep 14, 2025 | 9:00 AM

The Town of Ponoka announced the annual fall clean up begins on Oct. 14 after the Thanksgiving long weekend.

On that day, they’ll begin collecting compostable yard waste and citizens are asked to place all materials for pickup in their back alley no later than Monday, Oct. 13.

Residents should place the materials in a pile in their back alley and if they don’t have a back alley they should place the yard waste in the front of the property near the curb where it’s visible.

The town will make one pass down each back alley in Ponoka to collect the yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, weeds and branches less than five feet in excess of what will fit into residents’ green carts.

It’s important to note that bagged yard waste will not be picked up to avoid contaminating the compost pile at the town’s waste transfer station. Among items that will not be picked up are stumps, rocks, construction material, wood, household waste and pet excrement.

Ponoka residents can also bring excess yard waste to the waste transfer station free of charge. However, if the yard waste is bagged and is brought to the station, citizens must open the bags and empty the contents that are inside onto the town’s organics pile. No bags will be permitted to be placed on the town’s organic pile.

The waste transfer station also does not accept kitchen waste for its compost pile. Kitchen waste can only be composted through the curbside green cart program where the waste is transported to an approved composting site.
