The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame has big changes coming!

This week on The Everything Red Deer Podcast, host Josh Hall was out at Wolf Creek Golf Course in Ponoka for the long-running Alberta Sports Hall of Fame (ASHoF) golf tournament.

There, Josh caught up with ASHoF Board Chair Murray Cunningham (8:17), and Board Director Kelly Blackshaw (16:12) who is a 2x inductee (2005, 2006) and co-founder of KidSport Alberta.

ASHoF Board Chair Murray Cunningham said Thursday Albertans should be excited about what the Hall has in store for renovations.

“[The Hall] has been an icon along the highway just outside of Red Deer for a long time. Our mission is to honour those [who’ve been inducted] to inspire the next generation. We’re in the inspiration business,” said Cunningham.

“When you look at our building, how its laid out and how it functions, it’s time for a refresh, though it’s served a terrific purpose for a long time and looks really great.”

Preliminary designs have been rendered (see one early stage rendering below), with fundraising happening year-round to make it happen, along with the bevy of great programming already offered there.

The Government of Alberta is also a strong supporter of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Cunningham noted.

“We want people to walk in and be wowed,” he added. “In Alberta, we are about excellence.”

Meantime, a lot of work continues to be done by volunteers, from the board to staff, and that’s not to mention great community partners, it was added.
