Flags of Remembrance ceremony goes Saturday on Hwy 11, east of Sylvan Lake

Sep 10, 2025 | 2:22 PM

The annual Flags of Remembrance ceremony by Veterans Voices of Canada (VVC) goes this Saturday, Sept. 13, on Hwy 11 east of Sylvan Lake.

The ceremony will be near the junction with Range Road 12.

It starts at 11:00 with the usual opening accompaniments, like a smudging ceremony, blessing, O’ Canada and speakers.

At noon, there will be a horseback walk of the flag-line, pipe and drum band, reading the names of the honoured, the ‘Last Post’, and more.

All are welcome.

Flags and plaques will remain in place until Nov. 12.

The 128 flags represent the approximately 128,000 Canadians killed and missing in action.

VVC Founder Al Cameron says they still have about half the plaques available for sponsorship. They’re also looking for volunteers over the next three days to plant the flags.

If interested in either, he asks you text him at 403-358-6313.

Cameron also noted, to avoid any confusion for folks who may be unfamiliar, that the ceremony will include past flags of Canada.
