Preliminary hearing scheduled for man charged following shelter in place incident

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a man charged following an alleged shoot out and subsequent shelter in place in the County of Wetaskiwin last year.

Eric Dylan Dixon, 35, is scheduled to find out in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on April 13, 2026, if his case has enough evidence to go to trial.

He faces 12 counts in relation to an incident which began on Dec. 30, 2024.

It was that day when Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report of an assault at a rural home on Township Road 441 in the county. Officers reported unsuccessful attempts to contact the suspect, leading to a containment of the residence; the Albert RCMP Emergency Response Team was sent to assist.

Police say they obtained a warrant and then entered the house, attempting to arrest the suspect. He allegedly shot at officers once they entered the home, prompting them to retreat.

De-escalation efforts occurred while a shelter in place was issued for the surrounding community, lifting on Dec. 31, 2024.

RCMP reported the suspect eventually surrendered, was treated for minor injuries and taken to a holding cell. No officers were injured during the incident.

As a result of the investigation, which was taken over by the Wetaskiwin General Investigation Section, Eric Dylan Dixon was originally charged with:

• Attempted murder with a firearm
• Resist peace officer
• Firearm offences (x4)
• Assault
• Forcible confinement
• Uttering threats
