Red Deer’s Bennett Love talks winning Alberta U15 title

It’s safe to say Red Deer’s Bennett Love is in the zone on the golf course these days.

Over the Labour Day long weekend, Love went 5-under over two rounds at Lakeside Golf Club in Chestermere to win and defend his 2024 title at the Alberta Boys U15 Championship.

Oh, and the next day, he turned 15. Day after that? First day of school.

“Maybe having the experience of winning this one before helped with the nerves and some challenges along the way. I had a couple misses and it just helped me keep calm knowing I’ve done this before,” Love told rdnewsNOW.

“This being my second straight win, it also cemented me as being one of the best junior golfers in Alberta.”

Asked if it was a little sweeter winning it the second time, he said yes.

“I think this one felt good in terms of having a lead after the first day and being able to hold it,” he said. “I won this year with confidence going through the final round.”

In 2024, Love trailed going into round two, which is how many they play in most tournaments at that age level.

Love also credited his putting for helping him carry the momentum through to victory this time around, despite some struggles on the tee box.

The next best score in the tournament was 2-under, with two players tied.

Love now qualifies for the 2025 Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) National Championship, which is in Florida this November. He’s unsure at this time if he’ll make the trip.

All this said, Love has had a helluva season, including a third-place finish just a week ago at the Golf Canada-run Canadian U15 Championship in Pitt Meadows, B.C.

And it’s all left him at the very top of the Juvenile Boys rankings on the MJT. He also said he has the goal of getting to the NCAA.

Other 2025 results include:

• 1st at the Junior Club Championship at his home Red Deer Golf & Country Club
• 7th (out of 82) at the Alberta U17 Provincials at Alberta Springs
• Tied-24th at the 89th Alberta Open Championship (11th among amateurs)
• 1st at the MJT Ford Series major tournament at Calgary’s McKenzie Meadows
• 31st (out of 110) at the Alberta U19 Championship at Water Valley Golf Club
• Made the cut at the 113th Alberta Men’s Amateur Championship at Paradise Canyon in Lethbridge
• Tied-11th (out of 86) at the Golf Canada NextGen Prairie Championship in Warman, SK
• 2nd at the MJT Stewart Creek Invitational
• Tied-12th (out of 116) at the Golf Canada NextGen U19 Western Championship

Meantime, over on the U13 boys leaderboard at this past week’s Alberta Championship, Red Deer’s Edwin Park finished strong in second place.

Park had a not too shabby 74 on day one, but bounced back with a 70 on day two for an overall score of 2-over — four strokes behind the leader.

Elsewhere in the U13 field was Jaxon Rogalczyk of Olds who finished +19 and in 10th place

The U13 and U15 girls championships also took place this weekend at Lakeside, but here were no central Alberta golfers.
