Fire ban in effect for the city of Red Deer

A fire ban is now in effect for the city of Red Deer.

Effective immediately, the city has issued a city-wide fire ban because of the dry conditions and high temperatures.

This ban will remain in effect until conditions change and further notice is provided.

As as result, residents are not allowed to have fires using charcoal, briquettes or wood. In addition, any open flame fires, including outdoor fires, torches, displays, and open burns are also not allowed.

These rules apply to fires on private property, public parks, and within city limits.

All existing fire permits are also suspended.

The following fires are allowed:

• CSA-approved or ULC-certified natural gas, propane or electric barbeques or smokers designed for cooking.
• Gas fire pits and electric catalytic infrared-style heaters are permitted if used in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and meet the required clearance to combustibles.
• Pellet grills and smokers with an on/off switch that controls the fuel source are permitted if used in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and meet the required clearance to combustibles.

“Red Deer Emergency Services encourages residents to take extra caution to prevent fires,” wrote in a media release. “Proper disposal of smoking materials is very important as many fires are started by individuals throwing smoking materials out a window or discarding them in plants.”

The city says any person contravening the fire ban will be subject to a $210 fine and applicable response fees.
