Sylvan Lake looking for feedback on upcoming construction projects

Aug 25, 2025 | 3:27 PM

The Town of Sylvan Lake has begun planning for two new major construction projects which are expected to improve traffic flow.

The town says they’re planning the 50 Street redevelopment and the 50 Street and Memorial Trail roundabout projects at the same time to save money.

They’ll save money because the section of 50treet that’s being redeveloped connects with the roundabout, which will allow the town to do the design and feedback for both simultaneously.

It’s also important to note that neither project will begin construction this year.

50 Street redevelopment

Planning is underway for work from Memorial Trail to Perry Drive. Widening the street is expected to improve traffic flow for allowing smoother movement of vehicles along 50 Street. It will also enhance safety by improving sidewalk and pathway access for pedestrians. The upgrade will also ensure that 50 Street can accomodate increased traffic.

The preliminary design and engagement stage began in May and will continue through to September.

The second stage, which includes widening 50 Street and Memorial Trail to four lanes, is set to be completed the same time as stage two of the 50 Street and Memorial Trail roundabout project.

With no estimated start date, the project also includes a proposed two-way turn lane from Beacon Hill Drive to Cole Way to maintain all turns access for existing intersections and driveways

Phase 1, which is currently underway, has been budgeted for $220,000 using capital funding. However, the Phase 2 construction is estimated to cost $4 million with no funding in place yet.

In the meantime, the town is asking for the public’s feedback. They plan to host an Open House at the Fun Fest info Fair on Sept. 4 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the NexSource Centre.

Residents can also offer their opinions in an online survey that is available from Sept. 2 to 25.

50 Street and Memorial Trail roundabout

The town says upgrades to the roundabout are needed because it’s nearing capacity limits and improvements will allow for better traffic flow and safety.

The upgrade of a one-lane roundabout prepares the intersection for community growth such as new developments along the Memorial Trail corridor; increasing traffic along 50 Street during peak tourist season; and population growth.

The project is currently in Phase 1a of Stage 1 which includes the preliminary design and engagement of the roundabout.

They’re currently planning for Phase 1b which will include a detailed design and tender package, followed by planning for Phase 2 including the construction of the roundabout. Construction is expected to take place in 2028, according to the town.

The second phase would upgrade it to a two-lane roundabout once growth demands for two lanes to keep up with population growth. This would include a two-lane roundabout at 50 Street and Memorial Trail, which would associate with the widening of Memorial Trail and 50 Street to four lanes.

Phase 1, which is currently underway, has been budgeted for $220,000 using capital funding. However, the Phase 2 construction is estimated to cost $4 million with no funding in place yet.

The two-lane roundabout does not have an estimated cost or construction time.

Residents can also offer their thoughts on this project at the open house in September or through the online survey.
