Team Alberta ready to rock week two of the Canada Summer Games

Aug 20, 2025 | 3:40 PM

Team Alberta picked up where they left off, collecting six medals (three gold and three bronze) as Week 2 got underway at the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Rachel Grenke was ready to rock when she arrived at the Canada Summer Games, wasting no time making her mark in the Women’s Pole Vault, clearing 3.85m to win gold and deliver Team Alberta’s first Athletics medal of the Games on a rainy day at the track.

“Rough conditions, but we made the best of it and I’m just so happy to be in Newfoundland,” said Grenke.

Six more medals were claimed on the opening day of Athletics:

– Jin Shomachuk (Lethbridge), Women’s Hammer, Gold

– Maggie Slessor (Edmonton), Women’s Wheelchair 1500m, Gold

– Britney Volkman (Leduc County), Women’s Wheelchair 1500m, Bronze

– Dayley Reimer (Three Hills), Women’s Javelin, Bronze

– Weezy Eze (Calgary), Men’s Shot Put, Bronze

The quest to crown the top all-around men’s athlete began Tuesday, with five of the 10 decathlon events: 100m, 400m, Long Jump, Shot Put and High Jump.

Women’s Volleyball began their pursuit for gold with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Nova Scotia, posting set scores of 25-21, 25-25, and 25-17 to launch their campaign with confidence.

Following suit, the Men’s Volleyball served up a 3-2 win over New Brunswick, taking the first two sets and edging out the fifth and final set with a score of 15-13.

“Every tournament I’ve played in, the first game really sets the tone for the rest of the tournament, so I think it was a huge win coming out here for the first game and we need to keep it rolling going into the rest,” said Liam Brandsma, libero for the Men’s Volleyball team. “A lot of us have been playing Team Alberta since U16, so to be out on the court with this group of guys today, means everything.”

In soccer, the women’s team started strong with a commanding 5-1 victory over Saskatchewan, mirroring the tone set by the Men’s squad in Week 1.

Team Alberta Golf teed off at the Bally Haly Golf and Country Club to begin their tournament in wet conditions, with three more rounds scheduled throughout the week.

Meanwhile, Artistic Swimming and Diving began their competitions, which will continue in the pool across the week.

Due to a rain delay, the much-anticipated debut of Team Alberta’s Women’s Baseball was postponed to Wednesday, August 20, as well as Men’s Softball. Wrestling and Mountain Biking are set to start their competitions on Wednesday.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Adjusting to the time is a little weird, it’s 3.5 hours ahead, so we were lucky and got two days of rest before the start of the competition. We played a really good game this morning, if we can out work everyone then we should be good and we just have to focus on the next one,” – Ryder Harrison (Sherwood Park), Men’s Box Lacrosse player, on landing in Newfoundland and opening competition on Tuesday.

“Be able to share this big win with my teammates has been so surreal and just one of the best experiences in my life, as well as being able to represent my province while doing the thing I love the most and being able to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity like the Canada Summer Games.” – Kalley Dancocks (Edmonton), Women’s Soccer player, on the surreal feeling of the
