Province shifting its expense disclosure policy, again

Aug 20, 2025 | 9:34 AM

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s government says it is shifting its expense disclosure policy, again.

It comes after critics from across the political spectrum accused her of dodging responsibility.

Early this month, the province removed a requirement for Smith, her ministers, senior staff and deputy ministers to publicly post receipts for expenses over 100-dollars.

Finance Minister Nate Horner’s office now says cabinet has agreed to reinstate the old expense policy — but with a tweak.

His office says the exact locations of accommodations will be redacted on receipts posted online to ensure security.

It comes after the premier, facing heated questions at an Edmonton town hall last week, said the change caught her off guard – but was made for safety reasons.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation, the Opposition N-D-P and a former cabinet minister in Smith’s government have accused it of dodging responsibility.

The impact of the policy doesn’t appear completely reversed.

Critics are also demanding the government re-release eight years of deleted expense reports.
