Alberta RCMP offers tips for new drivers

Alberta RCMP is reminding new motorists in the province to drive safe.

Police say young and new drivers are more likely to be involved in collisions because of their age and inexperience, according to Transportation Canada.

“Driving can be challenging for new drivers—with it comes a huge responsibility to keep yourself and other road users safe,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic in a media release. “All drivers can do their part by staying attentive, driving according to conditions, and looking out for each other on the roads.”

As a result, the RCMP are asking drivers to keep the following tips in mind:

• If you have your learner license, you must always be accompanied by a valid Class 5 licence holder.
• Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of major accidents. Stay off your phone and avoid any activity that might impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely.
• Your passengers’ safety is also your responsibility. Make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelt.
• The posted speed limit is the limit for ideal conditions. You may need to slow down according to weather, road, and traffic conditions.
• Highways tend to be busier in the summer. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
• Be aware of your surroundings and don’t tail gate. Only pass when it is safe to do so.
• Be mindful of other roadway users, such as bicycles and motorcycles. They are not always easily seen.
• Driving for the first time can be nerve wracking. Be patient with new drivers.
