Red Deer man sentenced to 4 years in jail after 2024 traffic stop

Aug 15, 2025 | 12:02 PM

A Red Deer man will spend the next 28 months in jail following his sentencing this month in Red Deer Provincial Court.

Joseph Schneider, now 39, was charged with a litany of offences following an incident on June 10, 2024.

That day, RCMP said they conducted a traffic stop in Red Deer, after observing what they described as a license plate cover painted white. This suspicious detail prompted surveillance by RCMP Air Services, and led to multiple traffic stop attempts.

During the first attempt, the vehicle was used to flee from police at a high speed.

A little later, the car stopped, which is when members of the Emergency Response Team, as well as Police Dog Services, moved in.

The occupant of the vehicle was arrested, and officers said at the time they had located a .45 calibre handgun, magazines, ammunition, various pills and methamphetamine, a knife, and $3,000 in the person’s possession.

Earlier this month, Schneider had his sentencing, at which he was given a 48-month jail sentence, with 20 months’ credit for time served pre-trial.

He was convicted on seven charges of:

  • Flight from peace officer
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited weapon in a vehicle
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Operation while prohibited
  • Possession of stolen property under $5,000
  • Possession of substance

Fourteen other counts were withdrawn.
