Ponoka Aquaplex to begin facility improvements, annual maintenance on Aug. 25

The Town of Ponoka says annual maintenance at the Ponoka Aquaplex, as well as construction for some facility improvements, are set to begin on Monday, Aug. 25.

This means the pool area will be closed until the work is completed.

Among the items on the to-do list includes a complete renovation and modernization of the change-rooms, including new flooring, tiles, fixtures, vanities and freshly painted walls.

In addition, crews will drain all pools to install a new water filtration system and replace all the filters. The town will also scrub and deep clean the main pool, deep tank, hot tub, wading pool, and sauna.

Scrubbing and power washing the pool deck and painting throughout the facility is also on the list.

“The upgrades and renovations to the change-rooms and pool filters are part of the town’s annual proactive maintenance program at the Aquaplex to continually modernize and refresh the facility and ensure smooth operation throughout the year,” said Andrew Jones, Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities.

The town has already completed some improvements at the Ponoka Aquaplex over the last five years including resurfacing and refinishing the pool deck, wading pool and hot tub.

They installed a new rooftop HVAC that regulates airflow, temperature and humidity and added new cedar wall paneling, benches and flooring in the sauna. Crews also completed renovations to the multi-purpose room for birthday parties and group functions.

“The town has made significant upgrades and improvements to the Aquaplex every year for the past several years,” Jones added. “By investing in town infrastructure – one of the key pillars in council’s strategic plan – we’re able to enhance the user experience and continue offering a welcoming space for everyone.”

Late August and September are typically a slow time at the Aquaplex, which is why the work is scheduled at this time.

The town added that while the improvements are underway at the Ponoka Aquaplex, recreation passes for the Aquaplex will be honoured at the Manluk Centre in Wetaskiwin and the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre in Lacombe.

Regular operations at the Ponoka Aquaplex are expected to return in early October.
