Car stolen from Calgary pursued until arrest made near Ponoka

Aug 13, 2025 | 3:53 PM

The pursuit of a stolen vehicle which began in the Calgary and Airdrie area, ended near Ponoka Monday night.

RCMP say it was about 9 p.m. on Aug. 11 when Airdrie Mounties received a request from Calgary Police Service with a stolen vehicle investigation.

CPS indicated the vehicle had allegedly been stolen around 4:40 p.m. that day, from the 2400 block of 24A Street SW, in Calgary.

When the vehicle was taken, a dog was inside, however the suspect let the dog go and it made its way home safely, police note.

The vehicle at that point was believed to be in Airdrie.

Extensive patrols later determined the vehicle, a black 2007 Acura TSX, was located driving northbound on the QEII Highway.

RCMP say the vehicle was covertly followed, and at one point began driving northbound in the southbound lane, while going at an allegedly excessive speed.

There was minimal traffic on the road at the time, around 11:30 p.m., when the vehicle became stuck and officers were able to block it from going any further. The driver, who was the sole occupant, was arrested and taken to Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre for minor injuries.

The arrest occurred near Township Road 424, just south of Ponoka.

The 29-year-old resident of Sherwood Park has been charged with:

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Flight from police
  • Drive while prohibited
  • Breach of release order
  • Possession of stolen property over $5000

He was remanded and is set to appear in a Ponoka courtroom on Aug. 15.

“This incident demonstrates how all agencies work together for a common goal. Team work ensured the suspect was safely taken into custody and no one was hurt,” says Inspector Lauren Weare, Airdrie Detachment Commander.

“Alberta RCMP remains fully committed in building safer communities by working in partnership with our communities and policing partners. Airdrie RCMP works side-by-side with CPS on multiple investigations and we have a great working relationship.”

Assistance was provided by RCMP officers from Olds, Didsbury, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Ponoka, Blackfalds, and Red Deer, as well as Calgary, Red Deer and Wetaskiwin Police Dog Services. CPS HAWCS also assisted.
