Red Deer Riggers to face Edmonton in rematch of 2021 Sunburst League final

Aug 8, 2025 | 12:03 PM

The Red Deer Riggers are headed to the Sunburst Senior AAA Baseball League championship final for the first time since 2021.

They swept the Calgary Diamondbacks in the best-of-three south division final this week to book their ticket to the final.

They beat the Diamondbacks 9-8 in both games of the series including a tight matchup in Red Deer on Tuesday followed by another victory in extra innings Wednesday in Calgary.

“It was a really good series, they’re a super tough team to play against. They’re probably one of the better hitting teams in the league,” said Riggers manager Jaret Chatwood. “Our pitchers did what they had to do and we ended up just squeaking it out.”

They’ll look to win their first championship since 2017, with the best-of-five series’ first pitch coming at 7:30, Monday night at Great Chief Park.

Their opponent? The Edmonton Cubs, the same team that defeated Red Deer in the finals four years ago.

“We’re feeling pretty confident and the guys are playing great. We had two really competitive games against the Cubs earlier this year,” he added. “We’re really excited. I think we’ve got the right team to do it so I think we’re happy with where we’re at going into the final.”

Followed by Game 1 in Red Deer, Game 2 will be played in Edmonton Tuesday followed by Game 3 at Great Chief Park Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

If necessary, Game 4 and 5 will be played in Edmonton on Sunday.

The Riggers entered the postseason on quite a run winning seven straight games before losing their final regular season game.

Chatwood explained the team found their groove in July after a tough stretch in June and ended the regular season with an 11-7 record.

“We started hitting and doing all the little things right. We started making plays and the pitchers came out and did their jobs. We kept that momentum going,” Chatwood added.

The winner of the series will represent the province at the 2026 Men’s National Baseball Championships in Chatham, New Brunswick next August.
