ENDED: Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for Red Deer and central Alberta

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for the city of Red Deer and most of central Alberta.

The Watch was issued at 12:13 p.m. with officials from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) noting that thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening over western and central Alberta.

Meteorologists say these thunderstorms may become severe, producing large hail, strong wind gusts and local downpours. Officials say any severe thunderstorms that do develop will move to the east or southeast through the evening and overnight hours.

ECCC says to remember that severe thunderstorms can also produce tornadoes.

When thunder roars, go indoors. ECCC says lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury.
