RCMP say federal byelection candidates have reported threatening social media commentary

Coronation RCMP are cautioning members of the public about their online conduct during the ongoing federal byelection campaign.

The Battle River-Crowfoot federal byelection is happening Aug. 18, due to Damien Kurek vacating the seat so Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre can take another crack at earning a seat in Parliament.

“In recent days, several candidates have reported receiving negative and, in some cases, potentially threatening commentary on social media platforms. While Canadians are entitled to express their opinions, even those critical of political figures, threats or comments that cross the line into criminal conduct will be taken seriously,” RCMP say in a statement.

“Uttering threats, including online or through social media, is a criminal offence under Section 264.1 of the Canadian Criminal Code. This includes threats to cause bodily harm, death, or damage to property. Individuals found making such threats may be subject to investigation and could face criminal charges.”
