Lacombe Police Service reminds drivers of school and playground zones

Jul 19, 2025 | 9:00 AM

The Lacombe Police Service is reminding drivers to keep an eye out for the posted school and playground zones ahead of the upcoming school year.

Playground zone rules are in effect from 8:30 a.m. to one hour after sunset, but school zones are only in effect on school days from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

These hours are established by provincial regulation under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act.

The police are making the public aware because the area surrounding Father Lacombe Catholic School and JS McCormick Elementary includes both school and playground zones.

These include:

  • The east-west section of 54 Avenue (adjacent to Popow’s Park and near both schools) was designated a playground zone, providing longer hours of reduced speed enforcement.
  • The east-west section of 54 Avenue (adjacent to Upper Elementary School and Father Lacombe Catholic Schools) is designated a school zone.
  • The east-west section of 54 Avenue (adjacent to Gary Moe Sportsplex) is designated a playground zone.
  • The north-south section along C&E Trail remains a school zone, which aligns with standard school hours.

Police say motorists should obey all posted zone signs, slow down as required, and watch for children, especially near crosswalks, intersections, and between parked vehicles.

The Lacombe Police Service will continue enforcing the law in playground and school zones to ensure safety for all.
