Record amount in the Heritage Fund says provincial government

The Government of Alberta says there’s now $30 billion in Alberta’s Heritage Fund, a new record.

In a news release issued Friday, the provincial government says it is contributing $2.8 billion from the 2024-25 budget surplus to the fund.

“Alberta is turning resource strength into lasting financial security. By growing the Heritage Fund, we’re strengthening core services like health care and education, while preserving the low-tax Alberta advantage,” Premier Danielle Smith said in a release.

“This $2.8-billion boost to the Heritage Fund is a bold step that sets the province on the path to success and puts Albertans first.”

The government also says its goal is to grow the fund to $250 billion by 2050. They could then withdraw some of the income the fund generates while still allowing it to grow,

The province’s release says growth will come from “strategic investments, global partnerships and strong governance,” adding those investments “will eventually fund the public services and infrastructure vital to supporting the growing province.”

The government says the Heritage Fund has grown to $30 billion from $16.3 billion in 2019-20, and from $21.2 billion since 2022-23.
