Red Deer Polytechnic received a $150,000 grant which will allow the institution to grow hands-on learning in its Red Hot Science program.

The grant was presented to RDP from Actua, which is Canada’s leading science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) youth outreach organization.

The Red Hot Science program helps young students build skills in and learn about digital literacy including artificial intelligence through engaging experiences.

“We are grateful for this support from Actua which will continue to provide customized, immersive experiences for central Alberta students in elementary school, middle school and high school,” says David Pye, Dean, School of Trades and Technology, Red Deer Polytechnic. “Through these opportunities, youth will advance their knowledge in STEM, including AI, which could spark interest in pursuing a related career and helping to address a critical labour market need.”

This grant was made possible through the Government of Canada’s CanCode 4.0 initiative and the Strategic Science Fund, as well as key contributions from industry partners.

The program is run in collaboration between RDP staff, educators, and community leaders to offer STEM experiences for students in central Alberta.

“At Red Deer Polytechnic, we’re passionate about making science and technology accessible and exciting for youth,” says Pamela Neumann, Red Hot Science Outreach Coordinator, Red Deer Polytechnic. “We are incredibly grateful to have worked with Actua as a Network Member for the past 20 years. Because of this relationship, the Red Hot Science program can open doors for students to engage in a variety of STEM experiences—from building robots to investigating cutting-edge concepts like artificial intelligence.”

With the recent funding, digital literacy content and educator training resources will be available across Actua’s national network of over 40 post-secondary institutions which includes RDP.

“Equipping Canadian youth with digital and AI skills is essential for their future and Canada’s innovation,” says Jennifer Flanagan, CEO of Actua. “Red Hot Science at Red Deer Polytechnic plays an integral role in building their technological literacy. Together, we will continue to remove barriers so that all youth can confidently navigate and shape a rapidly evolving digital world.”
