Oct. 20 election Day

Lacombe County says voters should register early ahead of municipal election

Jul 16, 2025 | 4:41 PM

Lacombe County is advising residents to register early to ensure they can vote in the upcoming municipal election.

Recent changes to the province’s Local Authorities Election Act mean voters must be listed on the Permanent Electors Register in order to vote.

With the municipal election set for Monday, Oct. 20, registering early will save voters time at the polls and the process should take less than five minutes.

“By registering before October, you’re helping reduce wait times and ensuring the election runs smoothly for everyone,” said Michelle Eadie, Returning Officer for Lacombe County. “Even if you’ve voted in previous municipal elections, we recommend confirming your registration to make sure your information is up to date.”

It’s important to register to vote because Alberta municipalities are maintaining a Permanent Elector Register for local elections.

By making sure you’re registered or your information is up to date with Elections Alberta, it provides municipalities with accurate data.

If you’ve moved, changed your name, or are a first time voter, you will need to register or update your registration.

In addition, future voters aged 16 or 17 may also register in advance. By doing that, they’ll automatically be added to the Permanent Register of Electors once they turn 18.

It’s also important to note that residents can still vote in the election if they don’t register beforehand. They’ll just need to show up to their voting station with their Alberta drivers license or identification card. They will also need to complete additional registration paperwork at the polling station.

However, if you’re not registered to vote, or need to register a new address, you will need additional identification to prove your physical address.

Eligible voters can register online at voterlink.ab.ca or by calling 780-427- 7191.

To be eligible to vote, individuals must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18-years-old on or before Oct. 20, and a resident of Lacombe County on election day.

Residents will also need a piece of government-issued identification with their name and residential address.

The nomination period of the election is currently underway until Sept. 22, at noon followed by advance voting from Oct. 6 to 14.

Residents who do not register in advance can still vote in person on Election Day. However, they will need to complete additional registration paperwork at the polling station.
