Two youth arrested in alleged bus bench arson in Red Deer

Jul 14, 2025 | 12:13 PM

Red Deer RCMP have arrested two youth in connection to an incident where a bus bench was lit on fire.

Police say on July 12 at 10:08 p.m. they received a report that a bus bench was deliberately set on fire on Addington Drive.

The Red Deer RCMP General Investigation Section investigated which led to a 15-year-old and 13-year-old being arrested and charged with arson damage to property.

Both cannot be named because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and were released on an undertaking.

They are scheduled to appear in court Aug. 28 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

A list submitted to Red Deer RCMP from city staff, acquired by rdnewsNOW, has revealed a series of incidents since May 1 where benches near bus stops have been lit on fire.

Four of the incidents were not reported to police when they first happened; and due to the locations of the benches in all nine incidents, there is no suitable surveillance footage.
