Lacombe Fish and Game Association launches Outdoor Education Bursary

The Lacombe Fish and Game Association (LFGA) has announced the launch of its Outdoor Education Bursary.

The LFGA announced the creation of the fund at their second annual awards banquet held on March 28 at the Lacombe Memorial Centre following a strong fundraising year.

The bursary is set to provide financial support for youth and women to attend outdoor education camps and help students in pursuing post-secondary education in conservation, environmental sciences, wildlife management, or related fields.

“The Lacombe Fish and Game Association is introducing the Outdoor Education Bursary to promote conservation, outdoor education and responsible stewardship of natural resources,” LFGA President Brad Pallister said at the awards banquet where he updated attendees on past and current projects, including the bursary.

Proceeds from the LFGA awards banquet were $32,108 thanks to donations from the community and the LFGA board matched it bringing the fundraising total to $65,000 for the bursary.

The association anticipates the bursary will fund approximately 40 post secondary scholarships and around 200 camp spots over the next 20 years.

“Providing a financial boost for youth and women to further their education and experience with the outdoors perfectly aligns with our organization’s vision and purpose,” Pallister added. “If you live primarily in Lacombe or Lacombe County, or are at the very least a resident of Alberta, you can apply right now through our LFGA website.”

There are two funding streams available for the public to apply for, one for youth and women camps and one for those striving to achieve a post-secondary education in conservation and environmental related fields. In addition, eligible applicants do not need to be members of the LFGA.

“We’ve built a foundation of corporate, community and membership support that helps us give back each and every year, and for that we’re grateful,” says Pallister, who looks forward to providing an update on bursary recipients and outlining future projects at next year’s event.

An update was also presented at the banquet on last year’s fundraising efforts, which have led to a new playground structure to be installed in September at the Len Thompson Fishing Pond.

“The generosity of last year’s attendees, coupled with available grants and funding opportunities means we’ll be able to install a new playground at the Len Thompson Fish Pond. It has been ordered, and will be installed late this summer,” Pallister said.

They wrapped up the awards ceremony celebrating the hunting and fishing achievements of their membership followed by awards for photography and volunteers.

Following a successful banquet, they are already planning next year’s event.

“We’ve built a foundation of corporate, community and membership support that helps us give back each and every year, and for that we’re grateful,” Pallister said.
