Union members have ratified a new agreement with the Town of Blackfalds.

Members belong to CUPE Local 417-02, and work for the municipal government in a variety of roles.

Highlights include revised language for pregnancy loss, the creation of bereavement leave for pregnancy loss, revised language for domestic violence leave, and improvements to call out and standby language.

There’s also a $1.00/hr wage increase for all members, retroactive to Jan. 1, 2025, then a two per cent wage increase for 2026, and a three per cent wage increase for 2027.

“This new Memorandum of Agreement recognizes the commitment and importance of CUPE 417-02 to life in Blackfalds,” the union says in an email.

“It acknowledges their contributions to daily operations, and the often unseen hard work they put in to make local government happen.”

According to the town, there are 132 union employees impacted, 78 of which are fulltime staff, with the other 54 being summer students.

“We are pleased with the ratification of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Town of Blackfalds and CUPE,” says Town of Blackfalds CAO Kim Isaak.

“Through the fall of 2024 and the first two quarters of 2025, we worked collaboratively with our local CUPE representatives to reach a fair and meaningful three-year agreement that positively impacts 132 of our valued employees.”

The union notes a high percentage of voters cast a ballot, and that there was a narrow margin for accepting the agreement.
