Summer Sports Day, a chance to welcome newcomers, goes July 3 in Eastview

Jun 27, 2025 | 3:47 PM

The annual CARE for Newcomers Summer Sports Day is happening Thursday, July 3, at the Eastview Estates Community Hall (120 Ellenwood Drive).

The event is for everyone, the organization insists, as they hope to help newcomers feel more welcome in Red Deer and central Alberta.

Perhaps the second best part of the 1-4 p.m. event is that it’s free, and there’ll be food at 3:30.

The best part is of course the camaraderie and uniting of current Canadians with those who are new.

“The Summer Sports Day is a collaborative project of Care for Newcomers and the City of Red Deer’s Meet Me at the Park program that helps newcomers feel welcome by creating a friendly and inclusive space where they can connect with others through fun and familiar activities like sports and games,” says Gloricel Cayago, settlement practitioner.

“Trying out Canadian sports in a relaxed, non-competitive environment allows newcomers to learn about local culture while building confidence and friendships. The presence of community volunteers, city staff, and fellow newcomers fosters a sense of belonging and support, helping ease the transition into a new community and lifestyle.”

According to figures from CARE, Syria (11%), Eritrea (10%), Sudan, Ukraine, and Afghanistan (9%), then Bangladesh and Ethiopia (5%) are the most common countries of origin for intakes in recent months.

“These figures highlight the rich diversity in the city and underline the importance of events like Summer Sports Day in supporting cultural integration and community connection,” Cayago adds.

“This event is a great opportunity for everyone in the community to come together, celebrate diversity, and show support for those who are starting a new life in Red Deer. By participating, residents help create a more inclusive and understanding city where newcomers feel seen, accepted, and valued. It’s also a chance to make new friends, enjoy family-friendly activities, and contribute to building a stronger, more connected Red Deer.”

No registration is required, and the event goes rain or shine.
