Third Red Deer County councillor to vie for mayor’s seat

Jun 26, 2025 | 8:31 PM

A third Red Deer County councillor has joined the race to replace retiring long-time mayor Jim Wood.

Lonny Kennett announced his candidacy Thursday for the October 2025 election, and he’ll go up against at least two opponents in current Division 5 councillor Brent Ramsay, and Division 6 councillor Christine Moore.

Councillor for Division 2, Kennett says in a release that his campaign will be about fiscal responsibility, transparency, and agricultural protection.

“Red Deer County doesn’t need louder politics—it needs leadership that listens, plans, and leads with integrity,” said Kennett. “I’ve been the first to say no when the numbers didn’t add up—and I’ll continue to stand for what serves the people, not the system.”

Kennett notes initiatives he’s been vocal on, including securing $3 million from Ottawa to replace aging handi buses and transit buses — a big boon for Gasoline Alley East, in particular.

He’s also proposing the Seniors Tax Management Plan — a 10-year property tax freeze for residents 65+ on their primary home.

Kennett sits on many boards, including Tourism Red Deer and the Agricultural Services Board.
