Red Deer Highland Games return downtown for 78th edition

Jun 26, 2025 | 11:54 AM

The Red Deer Highland Games return this weekend to the city’s downtown.

The long-running tradition goes June 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Central Middle School — indoors and outdoors.

Attendees will witness no shortage of games and performances, including Highland dancing, heavy athletics, meeting of the clans, a Celtic market, shortbread competition, puppy parade, and much more.

“Central Alberta is a vibrant melting pot and the Scottish culture melts right in. If you haven’t experienced a Highland Games before, I’d suggest coming for the spectacle and staying for the Highland spirit,” says Ben Arthur, president.

“The Highland Games aren’t just a day out — they’re a celebration of Scottish culture, they’re a time for community spirit and collaboration. You’ll feel the energy in the air while the Heavies throw the caber, hear the thunder of feet as the dancers grace the stage, and feel the pride in your heart while the massed bands converge.”

Mayor Ken Johnston will serve as Chieftain for the day, that being a role which is reserved for those who’ve had a great impact on the organization and/or the community.

Ticket prices are as follows: adults get in for $20, seniors and youth are in for $10, and it’s $40 for a family of five. Kids under five are free.
