Hooped: Red Deer Minor Basketball announces closure

Jun 26, 2025 | 9:23 AM

Red Deer Minor Basketball Association (RDMBA) is saying goodbye.

The organization announced Tuesday on social media that after more than 10 years operating as a non-profit, it’s had to make the tough decision to close its doors.

“With the evolving basketball landscape and increasing demands on time and volunteer capacity, we’ve reached a point where we’re no longer able to maintain the structure and support the club requires to operate effectively,” the association says.

“This decision was not made lightly, but it comes from a place of deep respect for the time, energy, and love this community has poured into the program.”

The RDMBA did share some good news, saying it will still run its summer sessions this year. You can register for those here.

That program was initiated to spotlight other strong regional clubs, including HYPE Hoops, Sylvan Lake Clippers, Splash, and Highway 11 Athletics.

They also note HYPE Hoops will take on the U5 to U13 grassroots development programming going forward.

“This transition ensures that the youngest athletes in our community will continue to have access to fun, skill-building basketball experiences,” they add.

“To everyone who has been part of the RDMBA story — whether you played, coached, cheered from the sidelines, or volunteered behind the scenes — thank you. You helped build something special.”

In March 2024, the RDMBA shared that it had become a Canada Basketball verified club — saying it would bring more opportunities.

rdnewsNOW reached out to the RDMBA for clarification on a few points, but have not yet heard back.
