Chinook’s Edge School Division celebrated the long career of Associate Superintendent, Shawn Russell who will retire at the end of June.

Russell, who’s been with the division since 2001, first began his career 33 years ago as a teacher in the Northwest Territories.

His career included roles as a teacher, vice-principal, principal and associate superintendent for four different school divisions.

He moved into a leadership role in Chinook’s Edge in 2006.

“I am grateful for my experiences in Chinook’s Edge and throughout my career,” Russell said in a media release. “I appreciate that students truly do come first in Chinook’s Edge. It’s our culture, and I’m proud to have been a part of that.”

The division held a celebration in Russell’s honour on June 19 with both current and retired colleagues.

He reflected on his time in Chinook’s Edge and said some of the highlights were centralizing technology purchasing, developing guiding principles for establishing division calendars, helping establish aspiring leaders as well as evidence based hiring.

“Shawn never needed credit for his contributions. His legacy is hard work, and a strong commitment to Chinook’s Edge. Shawn quietly and effectively guided and mentored so many of our leaders,” said Ray Hoppins, former associate superintendent.

Russell is also known for shaping administrative procedures and policies, and having a direct influence on the construction or renovation of four Chinook’s Edge schools.

“Shawn is an important mentor, who is consistent and dependable, and believes in people,” said Lisa Baird principal of Penhold Elementary School “While his sarcasm and humour made us laugh, it is his strong relationships that have left the biggest impact.”
