AltaLink adjusts schedule for work on central Alberta transmission line project

Author’s note: A previous version of this story indicated the project completion date was changing, which it is not.

AltaLink has announced schedule changes for the ongoing construction of its portion of the Central-East Transfer-Out (CETO) Transmission Project.

The project is a 130 km transmission line running from Red Deer to the Alix area, and east through the counties of Red Deer, Lacombe, Stettler and Paintearth. The eastern portion is to be operated by ATCO.

According to a recently published update, AltaLink began its first construction period in fall 2024 and anticipated completion in spring 2025.

Construction on the first half of AltaLink’s 50 km double circuit transmission line is anticipated to be complete in December 2025, as part of the first construction period. The remainder of the work on the line will be complete in the second construction period that will begin in July 2025 and be complete in spring 2026 — the estimated completion date from the start.

AltaLink also notes that starting in mid-July, helicopter activity may be evident. The helicopter will be performing conductor stringing and hanging markers along the line — working its way west from Highway 601 and Highway 11, to the Red Deer River.

Once done, the transmission line will supply over 750 megawatts of electricity to the grid.
