The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ALERT) is investigating a police-involved shooting in Maskwacis this week.

On June 24, 2025, at approximately 2:28 p.m., Maskwacis RCMP was dispatched to a residence on the Ermineskin Cree Nation. Upon arrival, RCMP say they located a 36-year-old male with what was believed to be a firearm, at which point he confronted officers.

Mounties say this resulted in at least one officer discharging their service weapon. According to police, officers then transitioned to providing life saving first aid. RCMP say EMS and STARS responded and the male subject was flown to an Edmonton hospital for treatment.

No officers were injured during the confrontation.

The RCMP say they believe in processes that seek the facts and note it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable.

As a result, the Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and initiated an internal review process. ASIRT has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police during this investigation.

Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP says its internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member’s duty status will be subject to review. The RCMP says it is fully cooperating with ASIRT.
