Alberta NDP Leader Nenshi wins seat in one of three byelections

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi has held Edmonton-Strathcona for the New Democrats in one of three provincial byelections.

Unofficial results from Elections Alberta put him well ahead of the nearest competitor, United Conservative Party candidate Darby Crouch.

The New Democrats had acquired 7,779 votes with 51 of 52 polling stations reporting, far ahead of the UCP’s 1,279, according to Elections Alberta results Monday night.

The riding was previously represented by former premier and NDP leader Rachel Notley and a win was likely, according to election observers.

The NDP also had a lead of about 1,000 votes in the riding of Edmonton-Ellerslie Monday night, with all but one polling location reporting.
