July-National Lost Pet Prevention Month

Red Deer sees summer surge in missing pets, new data shows

Jun 23, 2025 | 1:30 PM

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, and new numbers from PetRadar reveal a concerning trend for Red Deer pet owners: more local pets go missing in summer than any other time of year.

Summer accounts for 34% of all missing pet cases in Canada, the highest of any season.

According to recent data from over 200,000 missing pets reported to PetRadar, pet disappearances in Canada double in summer compared to winter. The numbers show that 34 per cent of all missing pet reports happen during the summer months, while only 16 per cent occur in winter.

Local animal advocates say summer brings unique risks for pets in Red Deer. With families heading out to Sylvan Lake, camping in the Rockies, or enjoying backyard barbecues, routines often change. They say pets may be left with friends or sitters, or spend more time outdoors. Officials say open windows and doors, as well as backyard gatherings, can make it easier for curious cats and dogs to slip away unnoticed.

David Olthaar, founder of PetRadar, shares, “We see a clear spike in missing pet reports across Alberta every summer. Events like Canada Day fireworks can frighten pets, causing even the most loyal dogs or indoor cats to run off. It is important for Red Deer families to keep pets indoors during loud celebrations and double-check fences and gates before heading out for summer activities.”

With summer responsible for more than a third of all missing pet cases, experts recommend these steps for Red Deer pet owners:

  • Microchip your pet and keep your contact information current
  • Make sure your pet wears a collar with a clear, up-to-date ID tag
  • Choose a trusted friend or family member if you need a pet sitter
  • Keep pets in a secure area when doors and windows are open
  • Check fences, doors, and gates before leaving home
  • Stick to your pet’s regular routine as much as possible

Summer in Red Deer is a time for family, friends, and fun. With a few simple precautions, PetRadar says residents can help ensure their pets stay safe and sound at home all season long.
