Red Deer Games Foundation names spring athlete grant recipients

The Red Deer Games Foundation board of directors has announced the recipients of the Athlete Development Grant for this year’s spring awards.

Officials say these athletes were awarded the grants because they have shown a strong commitment and high level of ability to their sport. They’ve also achieved excellence at the regional, provincial, national, and international levels.

The grants, which the athletes applied for, are meant to help with training and equipment expenses as the athletes pursue their training and competition.

The following athletes have been named recipients:

Blaire Campbell -Track and Field: Blaire is a member of the Alberta Speed School coached by Ron Hewer. She finished 2nd in the Provincial ASAA meet in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m. She will be attending the Athletics Alberta Provincial Championships as well as the Canada U18 National Championships this year.

Cassidy Bouchard-Track and Field: Cassidy is a member of the Alberta Speed School coached by Ron Hewer. She is attending the Athletics Alberta Provincial Championships and the High-Performance meet Harry Jerome in Vancouver. She has achieved the standards for the Canadian U20 Championships and is currently ranked 2nd in Canada.

Joshua Gillard-Track and Field: Joshua is a member of the Running Room Alberta and is coached by Ron Thompson. He is the U20 4x 400 Outdoor National Champion, the ASAA Provincial Bronze medalist in both the 400m and the 800m. He will be attending the Caltaf Track Classic as a qualifier for the Canada Summer Games. He is also attending the Canadian U20 National Championships

Paige Zinger-Track and Field: Paige is a member of the Red Deer Titans Track Club and is coached by Max Legault. She placed first at the 2024 Golden Bear Open meet in the U18 high jump. Page is the 2025 ASAA Pentathlon Champion setting a new record during the event. She will be attending the Caltaf Track Classic as a qualifier for the 2025 Canada Summer Games and the outdoor U20 National Championships.

Mac Wawara – Baseball: Mac plays baseball with the Red Deer Minor Baseball Association and is coached by Chris Reitsma. He has participated with Team Alberta at the 2023 Alberta Summer Games and the 2024 Western Canada Baseball Championships. He has been identified as a top 40 Canada Summer Games selection team member and will be attending the 2025 Canada Summer Games callback Camp.

Zach MacDonald – Baseball: Zach plays baseball with the Red Deer Minor Baseball Association and the Webber Academy and is coached by Cole Armstrong. He participated in the U18 National Championship and as a member of Team Alberta the past three years. Zach will also be attending the selection camp for the 2025 Canada Summer Games.

Kingston Hitchcock-Swimming: Kingston is a member of the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club and is coached by Haley Bennett. He is the Provincial 15 yr. old high point aggregate award winner and swam with Team Alberta at the Mel Zajac meet in Vancouver. He will be representing Team Alberta at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in Newfoundland & Labrador in August 2025.

Hudson Lehman-Tennis: Hudson plays tennis with the Red Deer Tennis Club and is coached by Victor Anonsen. He has participated in numerous provincial 5 star events at both the U16 and U18 level. He will be competing in the U16 and U18 provincial championships in the summer of 2025.

Santiago Echegaray-Team Handball: Santiago participates as a member of the Notre Dame High School Handball team and is coached by Sylvie Grandider Bisou. In April 2025, he attended the Western Cup in Edmonton and achieved the MVP Bronze medal. He will compete in the Canadian Nationals this year and will be competing in the 2025 International Federation World Junior Championships in Poland as a member of Team Canada.
