Nicholas Bennett, who trains with the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club, has been selected to compete at the World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore this fall.

He’s just one of 19 swimmers selected by Swimming Canada to represent the country from Sept. 21–27.

He and the rest of the swimmers were chosen based on their performances at the 2025 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials from June 7-12 at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

The product of Parksville, B.C., who’s an S14 swimmer, had a tremendous showing at the trials.

He won three individual events and broke his own Canadian record in the 100 metre butterfly.

Last summer during the Paralympics in Paris, Bennett won gold in the 100-m breaststroke and 200 individual medley. He also claimed silver in the 200 freestyle.

“Competing at the international level is great,” said Bennett, in a media release. “We will just try to see what we can do after a Paralympic year.

“I have five months to train, so it’s exciting. When we get a little bit more endurance under our belt, we’ll be able to challenge my world record.”

Meanwhile, J-P Lavoie, Swimming Canada’s interim technical and program lead for the paralympic program, said the team could make some noise and reach the podium in Singapore.

“This team brings together an incredible group of experienced swimmers who have proudly represented Canada over many years, alongside a new generation of talented athletes ready to represent Canada with pride this fall in Singapore,” Lavoie said. “One third of the team will be competing in their first World Championships, while two thirds are seasoned veterans.”
