Funnel clouds and thunderstorms possible in Red Deer area Friday

Jun 13, 2025 | 12:23 PM

A special weather statement and severe thunderstorm watch are in effect for Red Deer.

First, Environment and Climate Change Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds.

Per ECCC (issued 11:22 a.m.):

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado. If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada. Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances. Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.

The weather advisory is subject to change, and can be followed here.

And ECCC notes we will possibly see severe thunderstorms this afternoon.

As of 2:30 p.m., storms are developing over the foothills and will move to the northeast.

Some may become severe and produce large hail, heavy winds and lots of rainfall.

Per ECCC (issued 12:27 p.m.):

These thunderstorms will weaken later this evening. When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury.
