Delburne School student Eythan Young has been named the recipient of a $120,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship.

Officials with Chinooks Edge School Division say Young is set to attend the University of Alberta starting this fall and this scholarship will help with his studies.

“I was thrilled to even be selected as my school’s nominee,” said Young in a media release. “And then late one evening when I was at home, I got an email. I opened it and it said I will receive this scholarship. My Mom started jumping for joy. We were so excited. It was unbelievable.”

Meanwhile, Jody Young, Eythan’s mother, said they are immensely proud of his hard work, dedication and determination.

“Eythan has come so far. The teachers and staff at Delburne School helped get him to where he is today and we appreciate the support they have shown our child and family,” she said. “We are beyond grateful to the Schulich Foundation and the University of Alberta for offering him this esteemed scholarship and for the opportunities and doors this scholarship will open for our son.”

Young applied for the scholarship at both the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, and said he is excited that the U of A selected him.

He plans to study engineering and hopes to enter the mechanical engineering program in the second year of his studies.

He also hopes to participate in the U of A’s co-op program, which would allow him to gain real world experience.

“I would like to thank my mom for her support,” Young added. “Also, I would like to thank my teachers at Delburne School. My mom says I used to struggle in school. I’ve improved a lot over the years, and my mom and the teachers have helped me succeed.”

Schulich Leader scholarships are meant for students who will take science, technology, engineering, and math studies in an undergraduate program in Canada. Each high school can nominate one student for the award.

In total, there are 1,500 nominees each year in Canada which is narrowed down to 100 scholarships given out to students. The criteria for the award includes academic excellence, leadership ability, and financial need.

Young was Delburne School’s valedictorian this year and was the founder of the school’s 3D printing club.

“Eythan has consistently demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership and personal integrity throughout his high school career,” said Principal Jocelyn Pennock.
