U16 Central Alberta Fire look to complete undefeated season with league title

May 30, 2025 | 1:07 PM

The U16 Central Alberta Fire are headed to the Southern Alberta Female Football League (SAFFL) championship game.

This Sunday in Calgary, the Fire will defend their title against the Foothills Eagles at Shouldice Park, with a chance to advance to the U16 provincial championship on Sunday, June 8 in Red Deer.

In the 2024 campaign, they won the league championship in a 62-14 win over the Calgary Wildcats but fell in the first-ever U16 Female Football Provincial Championship to the St. Albert Valkyries.

Head coach Dallas Haldorson said they’ve defeated the Eagles twice this season and despite that, will not be taking them lightly.

“They’ve had some injuries, their numbers are a bit lower than ours… We’re definitely going to have our strongest players out on the field for most of the game. It should be a great game,” he said.

The Fire finished the regular season undefeated against the Foothills Eagles, Calgary Wildcats, SAMFA Valkyries (St. Albert), Wetaskiwin, and Leduc.

Most recently, they defeated the Calgary Wildcats 28-6 in the league semifinals on May 23.

This year they brought in seven new players from Lacombe, Rocky Mountain House, Sylvan Lake, and Red Deer along with a big group of 12 returners. Four players also moved up this season to play for the U19 Central Alberta Fire program.

If the Fire advance to the provincial championship, the game will be played at noon at Setters Place against the northern Alberta champions.
