Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe & District to hold unique fundraiser in June

May 30, 2025 | 3:33 PM

A new fundraiser aimed as a team building event for a good cause is just two weeks away.

Put on by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe & District, the MegaBike fundraiser will roll into Lacombe on Saturday, June 14.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and local businesses, groups, families, and anyone who loves biking is invited to register to ride their 30-person mega bike.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe & District executive director Brianna Berthiaume said anyone over the age of 14 can be on the bike and at least 20 riders need to be on for it to work.

“It’s just a fun and unique way to be loud about mentoring but also it’s a team building and community connection opportunity,” she said.

Berthiaume explained there’s still spots available to take part in the fundraiser. They’re calling on different businesses but also individuals, retirees, and educators to take part in benefit of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe & District mentoring programs.

So far, they have just two full rides booked, which will take place every hour and begin at Leto’s Steakhouse & Bar.

Those interested can also stop by on the day of the event as their could be spots open on some of the booked rides. It’s a 3.5 kilometre loop through downtown Lacombe.

“We’re going to have a GoPro, loud music on the bike, and we’re asking to dress up and be loud. Either they can wear their company logos, or they can dress up retro, or wear Edmonton Oilers jerseys. We just want to see that team spirit,” she added.

It’ll cost $50 per person to ride the bike but there’s also an opportunity to fundraise on top of that. Each individual can acquire a pledge sheet or access the online pledge platform to help raise money for the cause.

There will also be a silent auction and there will be a 50/50 on the day of the event.

“There’s about 23 different Big Brothers Big Sisters across the country who are participating in the same type of fundraiser,” Berthiaume said.

“We decided to do it because it’s a different community connection so we’re building new relationships. Central Alberta has a large biking community and so it’s a new opportunity to connect.”

With a fundraising goal of $10,000, Berthiaume said all money raised will go to nine different mentoring programs within Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe & District.

More specifically, staffing dollars, program supplies, and transportation, among other things. They offer group mentoring, team mentoring, adult mentoring, and community based mentoring programs.

The organization helps over 400 youth per year so they hope the fundraiser also draws people in to learn more about what they do and get more volunteers onboard.
