Youth take to the skies at Lacombe’s Discover Aviation Day June 8

Young aviation enthusiasts in central Alberta will once again have the chance to soar above the clouds as the Lacombe Flying Club hosts its second annual Discover Aviation event.

Organizers say the event, originally scheduled for June 7, has been moved to June 8 due to forecasted high winds on Saturday.

Held at the Lacombe Regional Airport, the event gives youth ages 8 to 18 a chance to experience their first flight in a small aircraft, completely free of charge.

“We currently have 14 volunteer pilots, including a helicopter pilot, ready to take kids up on tours around Gull Lake,” said Justine Thompson, a Lacombe Flying Club member and one of the event organizers. “Many of these pilots have flown for 30 to 40 years— they enjoy providing those smiles and an unforgettable experience for the kids.”

The inaugural event last year exceeded expectations, with nearly 100 kids taking to the skies. This year, Thompson says organizers raised the goal to 125 flights—and reached capacity within a week of opening registration in early May.

“It was incredible to see the excitement last year,” said Thompson. “The moment it ended, our pilots were already asking when they could do it again.”

While the flights themselves are fully booked, organizers have expanded the event to include more activities for families and aviation enthusiasts alike. On the ground, attendees can try a flight simulator, aircraft on display, lawn games, a bouncy castle, face painting, and, with around 70 take-offs expected, plenty of opportunities to watch the planes and helicopters in action.

A barbecue will also be running throughout the day in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to the local organization.

Alongside the flight experience, children who are registered will receive a short “ground school” session led by a flight instructor from General Lee Aviation. The sessions give a quick introduction to basic flight theory and aircraft controls.

The event is not only a day of fun for kids, but a learning opportunity for future pilots. Thompson noted that many are surprised to learn that young people can begin working toward a pilot’s licence as early as age 14.

“For kids thinking about future careers or passions, aviation is a real option—you don’t have to wait until you’re an adult to start,” she said.

For those who missed out on registration, General Lee Aviation will be offering paid scenic flights after 2 p.m., giving families the opportunity to take to the skies together.

Discover Aviation runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the first flight departing at 9:00 a.m.
