County of Stettler to form Regional Fire Commission

The County of Stettler is forming a Regional Fire Commission.

On Wednesday, May 21, council unanimously approved a motion to create the commission at a special council meeting.

The County says it’ll help them meet their longterm infrastructure and operational priorities. It’ll also allow them to back out from the regional fire agreement with the Town of Stettler.

“After months of joint efforts, discussions, and every reasonable attempt to adjust the current model, county council determined a Regional Fire Commission is the clearest way to modernize equipment, remove administrative barriers, and support our volunteer firefighters,” said Reeve Larry Clarke, in a media release. “This decision is about strengthening regional emergency response for residents across our large and diverse county.”

The Town of Stettler has indicated they’ll not join in forming a fire commission, according to the county, but council said they’re welcome to be a part of it if they change their mind.

The county says it values the longterm partnership its had with the town to keep their communities safe from fire.

“Our move towards a fire commission is about looking towards the future and what we believe to be the best approach for our expansive and diverse region,” added Reeve Clarke. “The transition is not about division. It is about eliminating barriers, restoring clarity and support for our dedicated volunteers, and ensuring the continued long-term excellence and strength of regional emergency response.”

Fire protection will continue through the Stettler Regional Fire Department until the fire commission is formed and the county has already begun reaching out to surrounding villages and summer villages. So far, they’ve received support for the Regional Fire Commission concept.

An update on membership and governance will be released when agreements are finalized.
