Red Deer MS Walk set for Sunday at Gateway Christian School

The 2025 Red Deer Jayman Built MS Walk is just around the corner.

This Sunday, May 25 approximately 80 people will walk a five kilometre route starting at Gateway Christian School at 10 a.m.

The fundraising event moves MS Canada one step closer to finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and supports those people living with the disease.

Brenda Rosychuk, manager of community fundraising for western Canada with MS Canada, said they’re excited their months of planning have finally come together.

“I’ve worked for MS Canada for 14 years now so I have seen a substantial amount of MS Walks and I can honestly say that the impact of coming together to create change as a community is profound,” she said. “To see people on walk day rallying around those living with MS, you can’t beat that feeling… Being able to see the hope on someone’s face on a walk day knowing how much money has been raised is one of the most special days at work for me.”

They hope to have 130 participants and those interested can register the day of the event on location or can do so online. Typically, they see an influx of registrations the week of the walk and participants can register as an individual or as a team.

Currently, they’ve raised nearly $23,000 with a goal of $43,000. Collectively, from coast-to-coast MS Canada has a goal of $4 million.

“The MS Walk is really our grassroots program within MS Canada and it’s a great place for family and friends to come together to rally around those impacted or living with MS,” Rosychuk added.

“All the money raised for all of our walks goes back to anybody living with or affected by MS to support them in any way we can.”

Rosychuk said 90,000 Canadians across the country are living with the neurological disorder and new diagnosis typically happens between the ages of 20 to 49.

On average 12 Canadians are diagnosed with MS every day, which means every two hours someone is diagnosed. She added, women are also three times more likely to be diagnosed than men.

“Since 1948, MS Canada has provided over $224 million for MS research and in the last 30 years we have witnessed unprecedented progress in MS diagnosis, treatment, and care,” she said.

“MS Walk is connecting the MS community with providing meaningful connections from coast to coast. That sense of belonging is what the MS community is known for.”
