Lacombe County launches Chronolog stations to monitor environmental changes

May 14, 2025 | 11:36 AM

Lacombe County has launched a new community science initiative that encourages residents to help monitor the community’s three major lakes including Sylvan Lake, Gull Lake, and Lacombe Lake.

The county’s environmental services team has installed three Chronolog stations at Burns Nature Park in Sylvan Lake, Sandy Point in Gull Lake, and another at Lacombe Lake.

Chronolog is a time-lapse photo monitoring system where the public can contribute to environmental stewardship by taking a photo.

Each station has a photo bracket above the sign with instructions where the participant can place their phone, take a photo, and submit it using a QR code or email.

Over time the photos will be compiled into a public time lapse, showing how the landscape changes throughout the years.

In Sylvan Lake, water levels, erosion patterns, and shoreline dynamics will be observed because they are key indicators of environmental change.

In Gull Lake, the photos taken will help monitor lake levels and the condition of the shoreline in support of the ecological balance of the lake.

Meanwhile in Lacombe Lake, the photos will be used to not only capture seasonal shifts, but to track the spread of invasive species like pale yellow iris.
