CHECK WINTER BURNS ASAP

Lacombe County residents asked to check on burn piles as weather causes flare-ups

May 6, 2025 | 5:08 PM

Lacombe County officials are warning residents that extremely windy conditions are causing winter burn piles to flare up, posing a risk to properties, natural areas and the community.

The county asks landowners who burned debris during the winter months and early spring to check those piles today. While they may appear to be extinguished, officials say deep ground fires can smolder for weeks or months without being seen.

Warmer temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds are creating a perfect storm for these embers to reignite, leaving fire crews alert over the last few days.

These flare-ups can spark fast moving wildfires which can then spread unpredictably due to winds. The county advises, a quick check now can prevent an expensive and dangerous situation in the near future.

What to do:

  • Inspect old burn sites as soon as possible, especially if you burned this past winter.
  • Use a metal rod to probe deep into the pile. If it’s warm, it’s not out.
  • Soak any hot spots thoroughly with water, then spread the ash to cool it down.
  • If the burn wasn’t complete, re-pile and re-burn under safe conditions.
  • Never assume a fire is out just because you don’t see smoke.

“We urge all residents and landowners to be vigilant. Even a small spark in these conditions can lead to major consequences,” the county comments.
