Downtown Wednesday market moving to old Buffalo Hotel site

The long-running downtown market which runs every Wednesday through parts of the spring and summer on Red Deer’s Little Gaetz Avenue is moving, but not far.

The Downtown Business Association shared Friday that the market will take over the old lot of the Buffalo Hotel (5023 Ross Street) this year.

The move, according to the DBA, is in response to changing community needs, such as addressing vendor accessibility, fluctuating attendance, and rising costs. It will also allow for new growth opportunities, they believe.

“This new chapter for the market is about resilience and reimagining. If you’ve shared input with us—thank you. We’ve heard you,” says Chelsey Ward, Activations & Experience Manager for the DBA.

“We’re using everything we’ve learned to build something stronger, while simultaneously transforming a vacant space into a vibrant gathering place that works better for everyone.”

The 2025 downtown market, not to be confused with The Market at Red Deer over at RDP every Saturday, begins May 28, and runs from 3:30-6:30 p.m. until October 1.

There, one can find fresh local goods, and good energy, the DBA adds.

The market is also accredited through the Alberta Farmers’ Market Association.

“The City of Red Deer has been open and responsive to exploring solutions with us,” says Amanda Gould, DBA CEO. “This is not only about building a market—but a downtown—that’s resilient, inclusive, and ready for the future. We’re proud to keep the spirit of the market alive while adapting for long-term sustainability.”

The DBA says the new location will improve visibility, safety, and parking while lowering operating costs, and those savings will be put towards beautification, placemaking and vendor support.

The DBA says it is also advocating for accessible parking options, particularly those for seniors and other market attendees.
